Apartment Leadership: 5 ways to cure tardiness

1. Educate: Make sure your standard and expectation are clear. And, communicate it often

2. Monitor: Keep track with a log – I would encourage you to automate it

3. Counsel: Communication is key – finding the why behind the behavior many times will solve the issue. Documentation is a must be it positive or negative. I use the SBI model: s: situation b: behavior i: impact – more on that in a later post

4. Follow up: Don’t wait for the behavior to happen again – instead follow up in three to five days and out some praise for showing up to work on time

5. Take corrective action: Hey, if you can’t change people; change people. Don’t be afraid to free up someone’s future.

  1. Ha-ha! I was ALWAYS late to work… almost every day, by about 1-3 minutes late. It drove my boss crazy. I lived on site and figured it took about 30 seconds to get down to the office but for some reason could just never make it on time.

Yeah, these things would have cured it for me. He just ignored it, then was cranky, then would tell me once every two to three months “Hey you’ve been late a lot, could you PLEASE get here on time?” — I’d do it for about two weeks and would then fall right back into the habit of being late.

    HA.

  2. I’m laughing after reading no 5.. If you can’t change people; change people.. You can only do so much and if nothing will ever happen after doing almost everything.. That’s gonna be the best option.. Great Post!
