How would you answer the following question?
Since these computers are not monitored; do you have to register them with the NSA? That is to say if a terrorist decided to set up shop in your business center; how would you know?
My internal talk went something like this; hmmmmm…are you a terrorist? This is creepy and uncomfortable.
My response; “not sure but that is a great questions; I am going to follow up on that and get something in place – if necessary.
More internal talk; “and, I am going to pass your information along to them while I am at it.
Obligation
Do we have an obligation to register out business center computers with the NSA?
We are doing some homework but please add a comment if you know the answer.

That is an interesting question. I don’t think your average person would have thought of that, but it is something to be aware of prior to a swat style team showing up at your clubhouse.
M, check with the property ISP about this. Your ISP is supposed to maintain the capability to provide law enforcement access to your property network facilities through something called CALEA. It’s a federal requirement for them to comply with this.
If you have further questions about this, I’d recommend talking with Richard Holtz at InfiniSys. I know he has a much deeper knowledge of this subject.
Hi M,
While I’ve never come across any NSA mandates concerning unmonitored business centers, properties that provide machines as an amenity are typically responsible for locking them down. Group Policy (Windows) and/or Deep Freeze (multi-platform) are usually good places to start if that’s what you’re looking to do.
If you’d like to talk more in depth on the subject, feel free to contact me.
