Property Job Descriptions

We are working through a retooling of Job Descriptions at Mills Properties and it sparked a question in my head.

Should we exercise brevity and clarity and make them as straight forward and simplistic as possible?

Or should we do the opposite and make them very detail oriented, precise and exhaustive?

I have my very own firm opinion but am curious to hear your thoughts.

  1. I may be one of the only people on the planet who loves job descriptions, but I am of the opinion that brevity and clarity is the way to go. Too much information and/or specific direction can stifle creativeness and personal development; that is to say that people get too focused on their “checklist” and forget why they are doing the job in the first place. A strong manager can help guide their employees in the right direction and they don’t need 4 pages of words to refer to in order to do it.

Thank you for taking the time to comment! Love your passion for the world of human capital. Could not agree more – brevity and clarity in the context of action and results.
