Just a short bit ago the following article posted over at Bloomberg Businessweek – the news, not so good.
Network Communications Talks With Lenders After Missing Payment – BusinessWeek
What I really admire is what happened just about three minutes ago on Twitter – Dan McCarthy, CEO of NCI got out in front of the story. He posted a the link to the story above. Astute by all measure – in my opinion.
Dan, I applaud you for moving quickly in a space that demands as much and thank you for providing a firm example of great leadership.
Respond vs. React
There is a big difference and I would love to hear your unadulterated thoughts on the subject…in my opinion, Dan responded…
What do you think?

Responding denotes a professional approach, while in most cases reacting is an after thought. We see that in the whole BP situation. The only thing they can do is react since their apparently was not much in place to respond to a situation. PR departments need to proactively think of worse case scenarios on all level of business in order to generate a proper response. Based on the article you shared I feel NCI did a good job of responding. All the best to them.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Very well said!
The BP situation is a horrible situation on so many levels and a great example to use in this context.
Like you – I wish NCI the best.
I wholeheartedly agree – it's not unlike preparing in advance for a natural disaster. In a perfect world – you prepare in advance and practice – practice – practice. We have talked about running mock fire drills with our on-site teams to ensure our responses feel second nature.
J – as always, thank you for taking the time. Have a great weekend.

I absolutely and without a doubt agree that effective Leadership is at it's core built on the foundation of being proactive rather than reactive. Sometimes “responding” might not always be the best option as it has the potential to build a story that does not truly warrant the time or energy and actually can shine a light on something that otherwise could easily have faded out on its own. However, I would agree that in the above example a simple and quick response is all that was needed to avoid the “rumor mill” getting out of hand on the matter. It's tough to admit any type of company shortcomings – especially financial – so hats off to him for being upfront.
David,
Thank you for taking the time to drop some thoughts –
You bring up a great point in that an measured approach to responding is necessary and appropriate. It's all about the context and the intended and unintended consequence of one's action.
I wonder how one would go about governing what is appropriate and not appropriate to respond to? Gut? Intuition? Methodology?
Have a great weekend and thanks again for piping it – it's good stuff…

Mike,
Thanks for the kind words. Part of the communications strategy is driven by the nature of our company — we're pretty far flung and have lots of relationships, and everyone associated with the company deserves to get as much information as we can reasonably provide.
Here's a link to a post I did talking through the implications for our day-to-day business in a little more detail: NCI announces that it has opened restructuring discussions with its creditors.
Best,
Dan
