I read stories like this and it makes me recall a conversation I had with the internet strategy guy at a very large REIT last fall. He told me this stuff is just a passing fad. That, after I told him I built a Squidoo site for the Portland portfolio that outranked the companies very own web site in a Google search. I remember almost laughing out loud at the time but did exercise restraint. He told me he could just throw more money into keywords to fix that. What an answer! Let me see, I can do it for FREE and you can throw more money at it….oh, I get it! (Read: sacarasm).
I digress. I am so pround to see a mainstream company like AvalonBay take to the new medium. Technorati Tags: AvalonBay, apartment marketing, Web 2.0 for apartment marketing

Great to see Avalon Bay going after SM, but I’m not sure if they hired the right company.
This is from the article, “Prospective renters tend not to go Google because that’s going to bring up the “whole world,” he said. Instead, they’re going to local search engines like Yellowpages.com and Superpages.com.”
Uhhh, who are these guys? People tend not to Google??? Are they serious? They obviously don’t even have a clue on how Google works! And then to cap it off they say that people use Yellowpages.com or Superpages.com.
I fear that Avalon Bay could be lead down a path in the wrong direction with these guys.
I echo some of Mark’s comments, certainly not at Avalon Bay, they are a very successful company, and I almost was an employee by default when they were going to merge with Village Green in the late 90’s. After sitting in an uneventful all day On Line Marketing Summit in Chicago this week, I fear that lots of companies are being misdirected in their online marketing efforts.
