In light of the recent unveil of Wal Mart classifieds matched up and similar to the all popular and very effective Craig’s List, , which Lisa T and Mike have both blogged about, I think that a point we may be missing is the demographic that read and support Craig’s List is not at any point a Wal Mart consumer, are they? Isn’t the typical Craig’s List follower and user a frequent shopper at Costco, Traders Joes, Whole Foods, and Target? This is not in any manor a slam to Wal Mart, but the demographic is significantly different, it seems.
Setting aside that the Wal Mart site has a long way to go to be functional regarding rentals and the marketing of same, they will get that figured out in due time; but what if this may be a reason why Wal Mart is rather quiet about the whole thing, could it be about subtly changing Wal Marts consumer perception, wanting to get closer to the Target consumer? Maybe, Maybe Not, But at any rate, for now, Know Your Renter, if they are not Wal Mart Shoppers now, better stick with Craig’s List

Good point Eric, but I’ll take you one further. I shop at Wal-Mart out of necessity (it’s the closest place to go when I visit my family in Michigan), but their numbers are up, up, up right now in this economy. So I think they ARE attracting the Craigslist crowd, but NOT online necessarily. I rarely go to their site, perhaps during the holidays. But I do go to their store at least once a month.
