Why Not Be Great

Great Property Management Companies

What makes the company you work for so great? Is it great or is it just things as they are? Is it moving at lightening speed toward the next mountain top or has it hit a snag? Has it hit a stall point?

What Makes Great Property Management Companies?

I think the answer is simple:

An organization that serves the people who serve it. Love your people where they are – help them see where they are going – go about mentoring, teaching, exciting and training them up along the avenue of excellence.

Do that and you will have your greatness. Oh, and as an aside – enthusiastic fans will trumpet your greatness to their friends.

Your sometimes frustrated by the shortsighted nature of people Multifamily Maniac,

  1. I agree that if
you treat your employees well then the company as a whole will do well. After
all a company’s weakest link is its weakest employee.

    1. So very true – how do you think we keep people from being the weakest link? If you were leader for a day – what would be your first order of business?

      1. I think that
employees become weak really because they feel jaded by their company, (not me personally)
they feel under appreciated. Most of the
employees (and this is coming from other places I have worked too) that don’t want to give the extra mile because
they feel that the work that they are already doing isn’t being acknowledged or
rewarded, so why do more? I have heard multiple
associates talk about how they feel that they can’t move up in the company,
which is a little scary for me because I do want to move into management. So I think it is very important to promote
from within which also gives you more qualified and experienced employees and
it encourages others to go the extra mile if it will help them succeed. I
honestly think there should be more competition in the work place. I think it
is very important to be strong as a team and work well with the people on
property to get the best results but I think a little healthy competition is
motivating. As a leasing consultant I love it when we have contests it makes
the challenge more fun and rewarding and helps boost leases. I do think that Mills should have an employee
of the month. I think the acknowledgment
of hard work would be motivating to others as well as touching to the person receiving
        the award.

        Honestly I don’t think
I would be able to do anything to benefit anyone at Mills in one day because I
am not as familiar with the other properties.
If I was a property manager at my Property I would address what I think
is our weakest area which would be maintenance. I think it is one of the
biggest reason why we have a problem with resident retention. I would make it mandatory to follow up with
work orders and to also leave the resident a notice when a maintenance man has
been at their apartment saying what they have done and if the work order is
complete. I know that my property used
to have a maintenance coordinator that followed up with work orders and
coordinated who went to each work order and if the job was being completed in
the ample amount of time, I think that
position needs to be re-instated badly. The
maintenance supervisor does not possibly have the time to follow up with work
orders especially since our property is so large. On a corporate stand point I
would not abolish leasing bonuses ( I put that in just for you mike lol)

  2. People, people, people. The company you work for is definitely only as great as it is because of the people you have on board! You should always surround yourself with great people that can exude energy to the rest of the people around them, and so on. Our company will continue to be the greatest if we retain and recruit nothing but GREAT people!
