- Streamline Communication Channels: Implementing streamlined communication tools and strategies can minimize interruptions and provide structured interaction channels with team members, residents, and stakeholders. This fosters better time management, enabling property managers to allocate focused blocks of time for essential tasks. Find an app that pulls all types of messages into one stream of communication.
- Prioritize and Delegate: Effective prioritization is crucial for multitasking property managers. By identifying key priorities and delegating non-essential tasks to capable team members, leaders can free up valuable time and maintain focus on strategic initiatives that drive long-term success. If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.
- Time Blocking and Single-Tasking: This is my personal favorite! As a multifamily leader, it can be challenging to maintain a healthy work-life balance, especially in times of stress and uncertainty.
While it’s important to acknowledge and address stress, I will encourage you to develop coping strategies to help you manage it is also crucial.
Here are a few tips I use to shrug off stress and maintain my well-being:
- Practice mindfulness and self-care. I take time each morning to meditate. I use Sam Harris’ Waking Up App.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating nutritious food, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated can improve your physical and mental well-being. Set good intentions and habits in this area of your life – it matters immensely.
- Connect with others. Having a support system is essential in managing stress. Contact friends, family, or colleagues for support and engage in activities that unite people. This is hard work, and you must be intentional.
- Seek professional help if necessary. Don’t hesitate to seek a mental health professional if stress becomes overwhelming. They can help you develop coping strategies and provide support during difficult times. I can’t stress this point enough. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but rather a strength.

Just as people drown silently, team members who are overwhelmed or facing challenges may not always speak up, making it difficult to recognize when they need help.

I often say people should not be expected to leave their concerns parked on a coat hook while they are in a business office.
In my head, we should encourage open communication and provide multiple channels for team members to express their thoughts, such as anonymous surveys or one-on-one meetings.
Additionally, it’s important to cultivate emotional intelligence and actively listen to team members. By honing these skills, leaders can better understand the needs and challenges of their team and offer thoughtful support.
Proactively addressing the silent struggles of team members can lead to improved morale and increased productivity. By creating an environment of trust and support, leaders in the multifamily industry can ensure the ongoing success of their organization and the well-being of their team.
