Urban Gardens as a profit center
Mike Brewer · · 1 Comment
….Homegrown dining is becoming increasingly popular, favored not just by
health freaks, but also by the previously organically-unphased.
Around New York are urban gardening centers where people can be rent a
space to grow their greenery, and they’ve been booming with business
this year. At Drew Gardens in the Bronx, for example, membership
doubled from last year, and W.Atlee Burpee & Co, the American
largest seed company has sold twice the seeds of last year…..[read full story here]
We have a number of residents that do this on their own both in the urban setting as well as in garden styled communities.
I was reminded of a story when I read this. A number of years ago I was walking a site with Fred Tuomi in Vancouver, WA. We were barely out of the office when we happened upon this amazing display of flowers and vegetables all planted at the edge of residents patio. Fred’s immediate response was a question to the PM. “Would you raise that residents rent?” The PM without hesitation said, “No and if so, very little. They are a valuable long term resident.” Fred said, “No, no, no, this is an instance where you raise them substantially.” I was taken aback and could not wait to hear the logic behind his passion. He said, “this resident is never going to move, he/she has to much invested to pick up and move.”
What do you think? Charge for the garden? Consider sharper increases for those who have nearly surgically implanted themselves in your community?

Twitter or Friendfeed
I have to say I am a fan and will likely start to use it more than twitter in the coming months.
The developers are all former Google guys and if I understand it correct one of them was the central designer for gmail, google maps and google reader. Pretty high powered intellect that could make for some very exciting stuff at friendfeed.
Here is an exciting announcement I caught on TechCrunch today;
FriendFeed is great for discovering, sharing and discussing content
with your friends. But what if you just want to do so with a few select
people–like your bridesmaids–or talk about a specific topic, like the
Green Bay Packers? Now you can get a room!
A room is like a mini FriendFeed for a particular subject or group
of people. You can make a room for your family, your work team, or your
knitting club. Everyone in your room can share stuff with each other
and leave comments that only other people in your room can see. You
decide whether to make your room public, where anyone can join, or
private, where you have to invite or approve each member. You can even
choose to view everything from your rooms in your feed, instead of just
in the rooms themselves.

Digital receptionist

When I walked in someone directed me to a touch monitor where I had to fill in my name and a few relevant facts. I was then directed to be seated and that I would hear my name called in a few minutes. Less than five minutes later I was in front of an information/need identifier (not unlike a leasing consultant) who took the vital info. Less than five minutes later I was being seen by a doctor. I remember being WOW’d by the whole experience.
In the ski shop the system was very similar.
I have thought about this a few times since and I know there are systems out there (kiosks). The reason I am really starting to think about it more is the whole social media scene. Prospects, I assume, expect to see and interact with technology in every facet of their lives. Do you think there would be adverse reactions if they walked into an office and were directed to a kiosk?
One cool use I see with this is maybe, just maybe a more accurate traffic source identifier. If they were presented with a menu of just the sources we advertised with, would they get it right?
Or, maybe we do the whole bar code on every advertisement thing where when they come in the first thing they do is scan the ad or computer print out. The computer print outs would be very akin to concert tickets you get from ticket master.
I know I threw a couple things out there. I am very interested in the thoughts of the community.
