Harnessing the Wild Within: The Role of Personal Discipline
I’ve often pondered how much of the untamed dog dwells within us. Discipline is key.
If left unchecked, this wildness can lead to a life filled with chaos and unpredictability.
It underscores the urgent need for personal discipline.
Imagine the power of self-control as the leash and training that guide the unruly canine of our impulses.
"Master your impulses as you would a wild dog; personal discipline is the leash that leads to freedom." – Mike Brewer Click To TweetEvery action taken towards self-discipline is a tiny victory in this quest.
These control acts are crucial whether it’s sticking to a morning routine or resisting fleeting desires.

Can We Overcome the Human Energy Crisis in the Multifamily Space?
Photo by Roland Larsson on Unsplash
A subtle crisis has unfolded in multifamily, one not of macro or micro economics but of human spirit and vitality. Like many others, the multifamily space is not immune. I’m calling it the human energy crisis. This issue seeps into every facet of our lives, from work to community service. It’s a crisis characterized by diminished enthusiasm for the future, a departure from the vibrancy that defined the pre-COVID and pre-social media era. The question in my mind is, how can leaders at all levels in the multifamily space embrace these challenges and reinvigorate their energy levels?
The root of the human energy crisis is multifaceted, influenced by the relentless pace of modern life, the omnipresence of technology designed to capture and retain our attention, and collective fatigue exacerbated by global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. These factors have contributed to a general malaise, with many feeling drained before their day begins. However, some strategies and practices can help mitigate these effects, enabling individuals to reclaim their energy and vitality.
One of the most critical elements in this battle against the energy crisis is recognizing and avoiding “energy vampires.” These are not just people but can also be technologies or habits that drain our energy and diminish our capacity to engage fully with the world. Identifying and minimizing exposure to these energy vampires is crucial in conserving and nurturing our energy reserves.
Furthermore, sleep hygiene emerges as a non-negotiable pillar of energy management. Sleep quality directly impacts our daily energy levels, mood, and overall health. Establishing a consistent sleep routine, avoiding stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine close to bedtime, and ensuring a conducive sleeping environment are all essential to good sleep hygiene. The goal is to wake up refreshed and ready to face the day’s challenges. I try to get eight hours – no exceptions.
Equally important is the morning routine, which can serve as a foundation for a day filled with energy and purpose. Activities such as exercise, proper nutrition, and mindfulness practices like reading, meditation, or prayer can prime the pump of our energy reserves, setting a positive tone for the day. This priming routine is about physical preparation and mental and emotional readiness, enabling individuals to show up as a “beneficial presence” in the lives of those they interact with.
In the multifamily space, where the dynamics of community and service are ever-present, the impact of the human energy crisis can be profound. Yet, it is also a sector with immense potential for positive change and energy renewal. By embracing strategies that enhance sleep hygiene, prioritize mental and emotional well-being, and actively avoid energy drains, professionals can lead by example, fostering environments that are not only productive but also vibrant and energizing.
The journey towards overcoming the human energy crisis requires a holistic approach that acknowledges modern life’s complexities while championing the practices that nurture our deepest human needs. It’s an endeavor that promises to restore energy and a renewed sense of purpose and joy in our professional and personal lives.

The Power of Writing Down Your Perfect Day in Vivid Detail
Photo by Jaimie Harmsen on Unsplash
Do you ever find yourself drifting through your day-to-day routine, feeling unfulfilled and unsure of what you truly want? Getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of our busy lives is easy, but reflecting on our desires and goals is essential for personal growth and happiness. One of the most powerful tools for self-improvement is the practice of visualization, and writing down your perfect day in vivid detail is a great way to get started.
Visualization creates a mental image of a desired outcome, which can help us manifest our goals and aspirations. By writing down your perfect day in vivid detail, you are essentially creating a blueprint for the life you want to live. This exercise can help you identify your priorities, set clear intentions, and make actionable steps toward achieving your dreams. In 1996, I wrote down a 400-page plan for my ideal life, which helped me create the perfect daily habits to work towards that vision. And it has made all the difference.
So, what does a perfect day look like for you? Take some time to sit down and imagine your ideal day from start to finish. What time do you wake up? What does your morning routine look like? What kind of work are you doing? Who are you spending time with? What activities do you enjoy? The more specific and detailed you can be, the better.
Once you have written down your perfect day, take a moment to read it over and visualize yourself living it. Imagine the feelings of joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment that come with living your ideal life. Visualization techniques like this can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals, even when things get tough.
In addition to helping with visualization and manifestation, writing down your perfect day can help you identify areas of your life that need improvement. For example, if your perfect day includes more exercise or healthier eating habits, you can use this as a starting point for positive changes in your daily routine.
It’s important to remember that your perfect day is unique to you, and it may change over time as your priorities and goals shift. That’s why it’s a good idea to revisit this exercise periodically and make any necessary adjustments. I revisit my plan annually in November during a ten-day life pause. By reflecting on what you truly want and setting clear intentions, you can create a roadmap for personal growth and happiness.

Embracing the Conflict
“A goal is a planned conflict with the status quo.”
Have you ever set a goal for yourself only to find that achieving it requires pushing against your habits and tendencies or even societal norms? This can be especially true when it comes to personal growth and self-improvement.
Don’t Get Comfortable
It’s easy to get comfortable with the status quo, even if it isn’t serving us well. We may have habits that hold us back or feel pressure to conform to societal expectations. But if we want to make meaningful progress and achieve our goals, we must be willing to engage in a “planned conflict” with the status quo.
So what does this mean in practice? It could be as simple as setting a goal to wake up a half-hour earlier and sticking to a consistent morning routine, even if it goes against your natural tendency to hit the snooze button. Or it could be a larger goal, like starting a new business or pursuing a new career path, which may require you to challenge your beliefs about what is possible or take risks that go against the norm.
Be Proactive
Regardless of the specific goal, the key is to have a plan and be proactive in pushing against the status quo. This will require discipline and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, but achieving your goals is worth the rewards. As Jocko Willink says, “Discipline equals freedom.”
So the next time you set a goal for yourself, remember that it will likely be a planned conflict with the status quo. Embrace the challenge and stay focused on your plan, and you will be well on your way to achieving your goals and making meaningful progress. So, always be ready for a planned conflict with the status quo.
